Emergency physician Richard Vinroot Jr. received the 2009-2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Charlotte Latin School on March 26.
The award recognizes former students who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary service to society.
The following seven Charlotte Latin school students have won national awards in the 2010 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition:
American Voices medal: Caroline Chiaroni, poetry collection, "Newfound Magic."
Gold medal: Kathryn Watts, poetry collection, "Seven Tree Rings"; Connie Zhou, science fiction/fantasy, "Troll Bridge-A Memoir."
Silver medal: Won Kyung Jeong, poetry, "Shanghai's Genuine Panacea;" Lea Kokenes, drawing; Ashley Medeiros, persuasive writing, "Steve Irwin's Dream Shoes: Crocs"; Waseem Nafisi, drawing.
The students have been invited to New York City to attend the National Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 9.
More than $218,000 was raised for Charlotte Catholic High School through the 2010 Charlotte Catholic High School Foundation's Gala "A Time to Shine."
The school will use the proceeds to award teacher grants, contribute to its endowment and support its values and strategic goals.
Charlotte Christian School students on the ACT 2 drama team won eight awards at the North Carolina Theatre Competition Middle School Play Festival on March 20.
Individual student awards: Chad Damon, Outstanding Male Actor (Seussical Jr.); Nathan Pillmore, Excellence in Acting (The Canterbury Tales); Haley Putnam, Excellence in Acting (The Canterbury Tales); and Kristyn Richardson, Excellence in Acting (The Canterbury Tales). The team is directed by Mindy Damon.
