Beth and Danny King and their two children moved from Louisville, Ky., to Huntersville in July 2006 after Danny took a promotion with Enterprise Holdings Inc.
Beth has a degree in communications and marketing from the University of Louisville. But she decided to stay home with Audrey, 4, and Alex, 6.
Then a friend told her about Upgrade Lifestyle Inc. She wanted to lose weight and was impressed by owner Sarah Hart.
"I could tell immediately that Sarah truly had a passion to change people's lives," Beth said.
Never miss a local story.
After just 12 weeks on a health and fitness program designed specifically for her, Beth had dropped 20 pounds, reaching her goal. She continued to hit new goals, shedding 10 more pounds.
"Really, the weight lost was such a small part of the overall program," Beth said. "I may have shed fat, but I gained muscle and transformed my body."
"It was like a light bulb went off and I finally figured out all the pieces to the puzzle when I started working with Upgrade," she said.
After reaching her weight-loss goals, Beth competed in a sprint triathlon at Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics.
She fell in love with the sport and ended up competing in five triathlons last season. She plans to compete in four this season. She also has been training for Ironman events, half-marathons and a full marathon.
"My biggest challenge was the swim portion of the triathlon," she said. "I had not swum since I was 10 years old." Cycling was also new to her.
Beth hopes her experience will inspire other mothers.
"We are always so busy taking care of everyone else, we forget to take care of ourselves," she said. "The best gift I could ever give my family was a healthier lifestyle. What a great thing to teach your children!"
Upgrade Lifestyle will sponsor a 5-kilometer road race in Birkdale starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. A Kids Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m. Last year Beth King ran the 5K, but this time she will be a volunteer and cheer the participants.
Beth encourages moms to believe in themselves, set attainable goals and find something they enjoy doing to help them achieve their goals.
