Permit procedure change: The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office will change its procedure for taking concealed handgun permit applications. Beginning June 1, applicants must make an appointment to submit applications on Mondays, Wednesday or Fridays. Appointments: 704-920-3100.
Need volunteers: Harrisburg has several small projects that need volunteers. Also, if you have a project you want to do for the town, in particular with the Parks and Recreation Department, call 704-455-7275.
Tennis courts: The Parks and Recreation Department will apply for a grant from the U.S. Tennis Association for reimbursement of 75 percent, or $1,425, of the total $1,900 cost to paint additional lines on eight tennis courts.
Core Values Award: The City Council presented the 2010 Jo Atwater Continuous Core Values Award to Allen Scott, director of the city's Solid Waste Services.
New director: The Boys & Girls Club of Cabarrus County recently hired Mark Tracy as its athletic director. Tracy began in April, replacing Donnie Whittington, who retired in August 2009 after more than 50 years of service. Tracy supervises the club's athletic programs and implements the sports and fitness elements of the after-school and summer programs.
Donation to nonprofit: Cabarrus Meals on Wheels recently received $5,000 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation. Cabarrus Meals on Wheels, which serves nearly 400 people in Cabarrus County, will use the gift to pay for meals for clients who are unable to pay.
