Several hundred jobs are on the way at Metrolina Greenhouses in Huntersville, as the company ramps up seasonal hiring.
Meanwhile, a more-than-century-old N.C. yarn manufacturer is hiring about 125 workers for a new plant in China Grove.
The announcements are good news in a still-sluggish economy.
Metrolina Greenhouses will have a job fair from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Metrolina Tradeshow Expo, 7100 Statesville Road, Charlotte.
The company is a 150-acre wholesale-only business that services hundreds of Lowe's and Wal-Mart stores in the Charlotte area and various other Southeastern states. It specializes in bedding plants in the spring, chrysanthemums in the fall and poinsettias over Christmas.
The company has 515 employees. That figure will climb to about 850 with the seasonal hirings to begin in February, company officials said.
Metrolina Greenhouses is partnering with Balance Staffing on the hires. All new employees hired this spring will be considered Balance Staffing employees, but about 50 of them eventually could land permanent positions with Metrolina.
Applications will be received this week only at the job fair, but everyone will have a brief interview. Applications will not be accepted at Metrolina Greenhouses in Huntersville until Feb. 21, officials said.
Hiring will begin after Feb. 8 and continue until the third week of April. Hourly pay will start at $10; overtime is $15 an hour
