Open house: Feb. 26 for families exploring educational opportunities at Cannon. 1 p.m. Taylor Hall. Interested families may register to attend at www.cannonschool.org/openhouse.
Student campaign: Joanna Copio of Davidson, an eighth grader at Cannon, is turning a challenger from her principal into a campaign to help animals. Copio is organizing Pawz Too Run, a 5k race in Davidson to raise funds for Friends of Animals. The race will take place April 2.

New addition: Debra Otey will join Cannon as head of Upper School effective July 1. Ortey is currently assistant superintendent at Rockford Christian Schools in Illinois. She also served four years as middle school principal at Charlotte Christian.
Grade addition: Cannon added a third full-day first grade class beginning in August to meet the demand for the program.
China Grove Middle School
Teacher of the year: Chorus teacher Becky Morris was selected as Teacher of the Year of the N.C. Middle School Association's District 6. Morris has taught music in Rowan County through various schools, churches and Kindermusik for 38 years. She is also a choir director and organist at Christiana Lutheran Church. District 6 encompasses Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Rowan, Stanley and Union counties.
Concord High School
Parent information sessions: Counselors and administrators will be meeting with parents of rising freshmen during parent information sessions 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Media Center. the meetings last between 30-45 minutes.
Cox Mill High School
Recycling program: Cox Mill will started working with Harris Teeter Feb. 14 for a school recycling program. The program collects cell phones, cameras, MP3 players, e-readers, laptops and hand-held games. The program is provided through the Academic Booster Club.
Auditions: Cox Mill will hold auditions for the spring musical Feb. 17-18.
Teacher of the year: Janie Cruce was selected as Hickory Ridge's Teacher of the Year. Cruce teaches biology and physical science.
Jay M. Robinson High School
Heritage dinner: The Jay M. Robinson fifth annual African Heritage Dinner will be 4-7 p.m. Feb. 17 in the school cafeteria. Celebrate diversity and multiculturalism in the community. Artifacts from African countries and the African American community will be on display, as well as international dances, guest speakers and a Jamaican dinner. All are invited. $6. Multi-cultural club members eat free. Proceeds benefit the Jay M. Robinson Multicultural Club Scholarship fund.
Meet the Teachers: Jay M. Robinson will host the annual Meet the Teachers and Curriculum Night 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 24. Students and rising freshmen can meet teachers and learn more about course offerings at the school. Details: 704-788-4500.
Appointments: Dr. Michael Luther, president of the David H. Murdoch Research Institute and Albemarle native, was recently appointed to the Cabarrus College Governing Board. The board also approved Phyllis Wingate Jones, president of CMC-Northeast for membership and Dr. Joanne Byerly was approved to an additional three-year term.
