Kannapolis Deputy City Manager Eddie Smith will help lead a team called Fast Eddie's Fine Swine to compete for prize money in the $400,000 2011 Sam's Club BBQ Series & National Championship.
Fast Eddie's Fine Swine will compete with 29 other teams in a local round of Region 5 of the series Sept. 9-10 in Greensboro.
The Region 5 competition will be in Medford, N.Y., on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The national championship will be in Bentonville, Ark., Oct. 14-15.
Only 150 teams nationwide will compete in the series.

The national event is a joint partnership between Sam's Club and the Kansas City Barbeque Society. The series includes 20 local events, five regional events and the national championship.
Fast Eddie's Fine Swine is led by pitmasters Smith and Justin Hembree of Hendersonville. Hembree is Tryon's town manager.

Emma's now open for breakfast
Emma's Carolina Cuisine and Spirits, 11 Union St. South in downtown Concord, is now serving breakfast from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays, in addition to its regular lunch and dinner menus.
Emma's, in the historic Belk building, is open 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 11 a.m.-2:30 and 4:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and until 9 p.m. on Saturdays.
Chick-fil-A to host USO benefit
HUNTERSVILLE Chick-fil-A at Northcross, 16915 Statesville Road, will host a USO Night from 5-8 p.m. Thursday.
Customers will be able to greet members of the armed forces and write cards and letters to servicepeople.
The restaurant will also donate 10 percent of its sales during that time to the Charlotte USO.
The Charlotte USO is in Charlotte/Douglas International Airport and provides a "home away from home" for military members traveling to and from assignments.
