Two years ago, a group of Cox Mill High School parents had an idea: They wanted to have Bible classes available for students.
Believing its historical and literary value is extremely important and should be part of a child's education, these parents' tireless efforts succeeded. So the Cox Mill High School Bible Teaching Association was founded.
For the second year in a row, the association is planning a golf tournament, which will be held May 21 at the Crescent Golf Club in Salisbury.
"The only way for this to be a success is for us to have lots and lots of golfers," said Carla Barber, the association's board president. "Because the ... association has taken on the task of full-year classes next school year, we will need to raise double the funds to allow the Bible to continue to be taught at Cox Mill High."
Never miss a local story.
The board meets at the high school each month to plan various events to raise money to pay the Bible teacher's salary, all curriculum expenses and classroom provisions, in order to offer the classes to students. (Bible instruction must be privately funded in public schools.)
In addition to the yearly golf tournament, there are barbecue pit events, chocolate sales, coupon giveaways, entertainment nights and yard sales. The association has grown a great deal since this time last year, when my column was about the yard sale leaders were planning.
"We started with just a handful of parents who were committed to starting the organization so we could indeed have Bible taught at CMHS, as many of the other schools have been participating in for years and years," Barber said. "We are currently supporting one semester of classes: One Old Testament survey class, one New Testament survey class, one advanced Old Testament class and one advanced New Testament class."
"We as a group just decided at our last meeting that we will be going to full-time classes starting next year," she said. "The numbers are there for the students, which is very encouraging, but we really need more support from parents, churches and the community if we are to raise the needed funds. We need to raise approximately $60,000 for the school year."
