Open house volunteers opportunity: Parents and community members are needed to help at two school open houses. The kindergarten open house will be 6-7 p.m. Aug. 20, and the open house for first- through fifth-graders will be 5-7 p.m. Aug. 21.

Northwest Cabarrus High
Chicken dinner fundraiser: The band will host a Port-a-Pit chicken dinner fundraiser 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 21 at the school. Dinners are $9 each for half a chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, a roll and a drink. Dine in or take out. Delivery is available on request for large orders. Marching band preview: The Northwest Cabarrus High Marching Band will present a 2014 preview at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 on the field by Boger Elementary.
Weddington Hills Elementary
Promising Practice award: Weddington Hills Elementary School was recently chosen as a 2014 Promising Practice award winner by the Character Education Partnership. The submitted practice, called Legacy of Learners, involved a student collaborative project between art teacher Ann Marie Furr and IB Primary Years Programme Coordinator Mary Hooks.
The school will be honored at an awards ceremony during the Character Education Partnership Conference scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in Washington, D.C. Weddington Hills was one of 315 schools, school districts and youth services organizations from the U.S., Canada, China, Greece and Mexico to receive the recognition. Sixteen Promising Practice awards were given in North Carolina from more than 500 submissions in the U.S.

Mount Pleasant Middle
Open house carnival: The parent-teacher-student organization will host a carnival 4-7 p.m. Aug. 20 on the football field to coincide with the fall Open House. Students and parents can come by 4-6 p.m. to tour the school building and pick up schedules and then visit the carnival for games, face painting, food and other activities.
Athletics meeting for parents : A meeting will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 in the auditorium for parents of all students playing sports this school year at Mount Pleasant Middle. Another meeting is scheduled for Jan. 5. A parent must attend one of the meetings before a student can try out for a sport.
Gardening grant: The Walmart Foundation and Walmart Facility No. 6586 recently chose Winkler Middle to receive a grant for $1,000 through Walmart’s Local Giving Program. The money will go to support a gardening project to be used in the Life Skills class.
K-Town Parade and Bell Game: The Concord Spiders Band will march in the K-Town Parade at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 22, starting at the Boys and Girls Club of Cabarrus County on Spring Street Northwest, Concord. The parade precedes the annual Bell Game against rival A.L. Brown High. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Concord High stadium. Tailgating and a pep rally for the game start at 4 p.m.
Kannapolis City Schools
Nutrithon: On Sept. 6, the Kannapolis Rotary Club will hold a Nutrithon foot and bicycle race event starting at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis. Proceeds will support Kannapolis City Schools and also will go toward construction of the Rotary House for NCRC.
Events will be 5K and 8K footraces and a recreational bike ride. The 5K and 8K will begin at 7:45 a.m. The bike ride will start at 9 a.m. Kannapolis City Schools students will receive discounted registration fees for the races: $5 for elementary students, $7 for middle school students and $10 for high school students.
