Food drive: The Concord Fire Department and the Cabarrus County Fireman’s Association are partnering with the Salvation Army on a food drive. Donation barrels have been placed at all Concord fire stations, the Odell Volunteer Fire Department and several schools to collect nonperishable food items. Examples of needed items are dry pastas, boxed meals, dry goods and any canned goods. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 15.
‘Sleigh Bells & Sunscreen’: The Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte will present this tropical-themed holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 38 Church St. N.E., Concord. Doors open at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted to benefit the nonprofit organization PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) of Concord/Kannapolis. Those attending are invited to show off their most dreadful holiday sweaters and be part of Mr. Wonderful’s Wonderful Holiday Sweater Parade. Eric Lane Barnes has been commissioned to write a hysterical piece just for this occasion. “Sleigh Bells and Sunscreen” will recall wishes for a snowstorm in the July heat and dreams of a tropical beach in mid-December.
Thanksgiving closing: City of Concord offices will be closed Nov. 27-28. Garbage collection, recycling and bulky item collection will be on a one-day delay; Thursday’s garbage will be collected Friday, and Friday’s garbage on Saturday.

Place yard waste at the curb by 6 a.m. Nov. 24. It will be collected by the end of the day Nov. 26 and yours may be collected anytime Nov. 24-26. There will be no loose leaf collection scheduled during Thanksgiving week.
City parks and greenways will be open on the normal schedule. The Academy, Hartsell and Logan recreation centers will be closed Thanksgiving Day; open noon-6 p.m. Nov. 28; and open noon-5 p.m. Nov. 29.
Closed for holiday: Town of Harrisburg offices will be closed on Nov. 27-28 in observance of Thanksgiving. There will be no garbage and recycling collection Nov. 27. Collection will run on a one-day delay the rest of the week. Customers with regularly scheduled service on Friday will be serviced Nov. 29.

Regularly scheduled Parks and Recreation programs won’t take place Nov. 27 but will resume Nov. 28. Pharr Mill, Harrisburg and Stallings Road parks will be open at normal hours on Thanksgiving weekend.
Tree lighting: The annual Harrisburg Christmas Tree Lighting will be 6-9 p.m. Dec. 5 in Veterans Park at Town Hall, 4100 Main St. Parks and Recreation basketball league practice begins Dec. 1. Visit www.harrisburgnc.org/ for details.
