The rising gas costs that pushed many to public transportation will force a rate increase starting this week on all Charlotte Area Transit System bus and rail trips.
Starting Monday, the regular fare price for an adult on local bus, light-rail and Charlotte Trolley trips will increase 20 cents to $1.50. Weekly passes will increase from $13 to $15 and monthly passes from $52 to $60. Express route, senior and students rates also will rise.
“We travel more than 20 million miles annually,” said CATS' chief executive officer Keith Parker in a news release, “so any increase in fuel impacts our budget dramatically. Without the fare increase, we projected a $4 million shortfall in the (Fiscal Year) 2009 CATS operating fuel budget."
