Trader Joe's is scheduled to open its third Charlotte location Friday in the Metropolitan development, bringing a long-awaited new grocery store to the center city.
If the store's first two Charlotte openings are any indication, the Metropolitan Trader Joe's will likely welcome large crowds of eager shoppers, observers say. Located at Kings Drive and Baxter Street, the store is scheduled to open at 9 a.m.
The opening brings another large, popular retailer to residents who say they have grown weary of driving miles to reach their favorite stores. Over the last year, Home Depot, Best Buy, Target, Staples and Marshalls have all brought stores to Metropolitan. Also, Lowe's will soon open a new home improvement store in South End.
“I will definitely shop (at the new Trader Joe's). It's so much closer,” Myers Park resident Krista Walker said last week as she loaded groceries into her car at the Trader Joe's on Rea Road. The grocer also has a location in the University area.
Michael Smith, president and chief executive of Charlotte Center City Partners, said neighborhood retail is essential as the residential population continues to grow.
“Trader Joe's is a nationally celebrated, unique grocer and will be a great complement to the Second Ward and midtown,” he said.
Shopping at the Metropolitan Marshalls last week, Dilworth resident Jeannie Cameron said she was eager to have another grocery store option closeby. She already regularly buys groceries at Reid's Fine Foods uptown.
“We've been waiting so long for this,” she said. “I really can't wait.”
