Although Myers Park Hardware will close at the end of the month, the owners have decided the store's garden shop will stay open as the Myers Park Garden Shop.

A Charlotte mainstay since 1947, the hardware store is one of the last remaining independent hardware stores in town. Owners announced in September they would be retiring and the store would be closing its doors for good. They said the store had faced increased competition from big-box retailers, and its numbers had been flat for a while.

Owner Hugh Huntington and family decided to keep the garden shop open after receiving requests from many Myers Park residents.

The garden shop will operate with a new mix of products. Meanwhile, the hardware store space will be leased to a new tenant that has not yet been determined.

Paper Source to open

Paper Source, a Chicago-based stationery chain, will open its first Charlotte store Saturday at Phillips Place.

The shop, one of three new locations the company is opening across the country this month, will sell cards, papers and accessories in a range of shapes and sizes, using an exclusive warm color pallette.
