The Community Foundation of Burke County has awarded $74,000 in community grants to 14 nonprofit organizations serving the Burke County area.
Chaired by Paul Deaton, the foundation's grants committee researched needs in Burke County and programs that are meeting those needs. Committee members Deaton, Doris Fullwood, John McElrath, Marc Mitchell, Jean VanNoppen visited sites
Grant recipients include the American Red Cross, Angel Food Ministry of First United Methodist Church in Valdese, Appalachian Family Innovations, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Burke County United Way, Compassionate Hearts of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina, Foothills Service Project, Frankie Foundation, Good Samaritan Clinic, Habitat for Humanity of Burke County, The Meeting Place One, New Day Christian Church and Repay.
Barbara Erwin of Drexel recently joined Bank of Granite as vice president and portfolio manager.
Erwin comes to Bank of Granite with more than 30 years of banking experience, with a concentration in commercial lending.
Erwin was named 2007-08 Rotarian of the Year by the Rotary Club of Hickory Sunrise. She is also treasurer for Palliative Care and Hospice of Catawba County.
