Flu shots in Gastonia
The Gaston County Health Department is offering flu shots at the general clinic on 911 West Hudson Blvd. in Gastonia.
Shots are available weekdays 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. No appointments are necessary and patients will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who prefer an appointment can schedule one by calling 704-853-5003.
Flu shots costs $30; pneumonia shots are $38. Medicare, Medicaid and some private insurance plans cover the cost of these shots. Bring insurance cards when coming to get the shots.

The Catawba County Chamber of Commerce will host a candidates forum and luncheon Oct. 15 at the Hickory Metro Convention Center.
The event will be 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Candidates will discuss the economy, education, energy, taxes and jobs, plus take audience questions.
Candidates invited include those for the U.S. Senate, 10th District congressional seat, governor and lieutenant governor. The public is invited, but registration is required by Oct. 13. The city of Kings Mountain will host the annual Gateway Festival 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.
The downtown event celebrates Kings Mountain's designation as the “Gateway City” to three parks – Crowders Mountain State Park, Kings Mountain State Park and the Kings Mountain National Military Park.
The fall festival highlights the history of the Revolutionary War battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina on Oct. 7, 1780.
A free shuttle will run between the gazebo at Patriots Park, the Kings Mountain Historic Museum, Central United Methodist Church, Mauney Memorial Library, the Kings Mountain Art Depot, and through the historic district.
Music will include bluegrass, folk and Americana. Bake sales, craft booths, a petting zoo, an antique car show and re-enactments of the Revolutionary soldiers' encampment are planned.

$500 reward offered
A $500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of those who painted graffiti on downtown Hickory businesses and a public mural.
The vandalism happened some time between 7 p.m. Sept. 21 and 8 a.m. Sept. 22.
