Hickory was recently chosen to host the 66th Annual State NAACP Convention, Oct. 8-10 at the Hickory Metro Convention Center, 1960 13th Ave. Drive S.E.
The conference will include workshops, an internship job fair, a youth luncheon with keynote speaker Nate Parker and a Freedom Fund awards banquet. The weekend will kick off with the Romallus Murphy Continuing Legal Education Seminar.

On Aug. 14, Gastonia police received the department's first bullet- and stab-proof K-9 vest. It will be used by K-9 dog Vader.
Gastonia police received the vest through the nonprofit organization, Vest 'N Police Dog Protection. The organization raises funds to help buy the vests for police departments. The vests normally cost $695 each.
Police officer Thomas Doby is working to obtain vests for all the dogs in the department's K-9 Unit.
Gastonia Parks and Recreation Department will hold several dance classes this fall.
Line dance classes will be held every Monday for eight weeks, beginning Sept. 14. The beginners' class will be 7-8 p.m. and the intermediate class will be 8-9 p.m. Cost is $25 per person.
Shag classes will be held every Wednesday for seven weeks, beginning Sept. 16. The beginners' class will be 7-8 p.m. and the intermediate class will be 8-9 p.m. Cost is $35 per person.

The music program of Lenoir-Rhyne University will present Jack Murray, accompanied by Anna Brock, in a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mauney Music Building on campus. Admission is free.
An adjunct professor of music at Lenoir-Rhyne, Murray has performed with Broadway shows, symphony orchestras, jazz bands and rock bands. Brock has performed in concerts with the N.C. Dance Theater, the Charlotte Symphony, Charlotte Symphony Oratorio Singers and Broadway touring productions.
