While on lake patrol, Cornelius Police Department Sgt. George Brinzey, likes to recognize good boating conduct.
In August, and at other times, he approached a few families having fun on an island and gave out coupons for free milkshakes to children who were wearing life jackets.
“We are not only here to enforce the law, but to promote good behavior, too,” he said.
The Lake Patrol is one of several divisions in the Cornelius Police Department. Cornelius is 15 square miles and borders 70 miles of shoreline on Lake Norman. The lake attracts a numbers of residents and visitors for recreation and leisure activities during the summer.
In fiscal years 2016 and 2017, the department has allocated eight full-time equivalent positions to the Lake Patrol. Those positions are partially funded by Mecklenburg County.
