Keith and Jen Koppenal said some sound advice helped their new business get off to a good start.
In 2002, the couple moved from New York to the Magnolia Estates subdivision in Cornelius for a job for Keith. Now they are working for themselves.
Keith and Jen started Kope Kustoms, building decks, remodeling, tiling and other handyman services. And they said they are grateful to the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce.
“They were always really pleasant. Not knowing where to go or what to do (to start our business), all we did is call them up, and they helped,” Keith said.
The chamber helped simplify the filing process, got them to the right contacts and gave them good advice on dealing with such areas as overhead, investing and expansion, he added.
The couple got their first customer through Keith’s brother, Kevin, who mentioned the new business to Dennis and Mary Lehman.
“We doubled the size of their bathroom and tripled the size of their deck,” Keith said. “They knew they were our first clients. They put so much faith in us.”
Keith said they started the business because “I wanted to work with my family. Together everyday.”
“It’s fun to work together,” Jen said.
Not to be left out, their daughter, Mia, said, “Mommy’s the boss. Daddy’s the boss, too. I’m the boss of my playhouse. Emmy’s (the dog) the boss of going outside.”
