After a national search, town commissioners on Friday voted unanimously to hire a town manager who has run communities in Ohio for 30 years.
Steven Husemann, 57, begins in Mooresville on Sept. 2.
He is executive director of the Miami Valley (Ohio) Communications Council, an organization of eight cities and 16 affiliates that monitors and regulates common cable TV franchise agreements and government cable channels.
Mooresville has been in the cable TV business since December, when the town and Davidson bought the former local Adelphia system and created MI-Connection.
Husemann assumed the Miami Valley job after retiring in 2006 as manager of Kettering, Ohio.
He started his career as a city planner in Macon, Ga., then was assistant city manager in Oxford, Ohio. He later became city manager of two other Ohio cities before Kettering, including in Sidney, which is about the size of Mooresville, Husemann said in a phone interview.
He is “overly, overly qualified,” Mooresville town commissioner Mac Herring said. “He's dealt with a lot of the things we're dealing with.”
Former Town Manager Jamie Justice resigned in January at the board's suggestion, according to the terms of his leaving, and commissioners hired consultant The Mercer Group to help with the search for a replacement.
About 50 people applied for the job, town commissioner Frank Rader said. The Mercer Group narrowed the field to 15 candidates, and the commissioners interviewed five finalists in sessions closed to the public.
“I'd be foolish to try to come in and solve all problems in the first week,” Husemann said, when asked which issues he learned about in his interviews for the job and would want to address.
He said he prefers receiving guidance from the board and working closely with the commissioners.
Husemann's wife, Diana, is a speech therapist whose sister and her family live in Rock Hill, S.C. Steve Husemann's brother and his family live in Wilmington.
The couple's son, Matthew, is a captain in the Air Force and a pilot assigned to the Pentagon.
Steven and Diana Husemann's daughter, Emily, will receive her doctorate of physical therapy on Aug. 25 from Ohio State University. She is getting married on Saturday.
