About 50 people marched on the Mooresville Town Hall on Monday evening to protest what they called corruption in the town's government.
Humming the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and chanting “we demand justice” and “enough is enough,” they said they were angered by questions surrounding Police Chief John Crone's Cops for Kids program. Crone is on paid leave while the State Bureau of Investigation looks into bookkeeping and the handling of money in the program. Crone has said he has done nothing wrong.
Never miss a local story.
Larry Green, pastor of Fieldstone Presbyterian Church in Mooresville and founder of Citizens for Responsible Government – Mooresville, organized Monday's rally, which was held outside Town Hall before the Town Board's regular meeting. The protesters want the town board to fire interim Town Manager Erskine Smith for what they say was his lack of oversight of the program, and they want a recall vote for any town commissioner who has supported Crone before the investigation is complete.
