Davidson Day School
Re-enrollment: In early February, the school will send out re-enrollment contracts for the 2010-2011 academic year. The contracts are due by Feb. 15. Financial aid applications are due by Feb. 23. The school is anticipating another significant increase in enrollment this year and has had a record number of inquiries and applications. Many grades are already full or near capacity so please get your re-enrollment agreements in by the deadline to ensure your child's spot for next year. Academic help: The Academic Enrichment Center is hiring part-time tutors for all levels of math and is looking for a part-time reading specialist to work with students in one-to-one and small-group settings, both during the day and after school. New admissions director: Davidson Day announced Lauren Marlis as the school's new Director of Admissions. After spending the last 24 years on Hilton Head, Lauren nows calls Charlotte and Davidson Day, her new home. For the past seven years, she was the director of admissions at Hilton Head Prepatory School, where she grew enrollment 20 percent up to the school's capacity. Anne Buechler, who has been director of admissions, will continue to serve an admissions role this school year and take on the additional responsibility of alumni liaison. She will also will return to her passion of teaching in the classroom.
Lake Norman Charter School
Leadership event: On Saturday, Jan. 30, Meredith College will offer its annual women's leadership development conference for high school juniors. The conference is designed to help young women become more effective leaders. This is a wonderful opportunity for juniors. Pre-registration is required, and they will only 150 students can be able to accommodated 150 students. 2010-2011 school-year applications: Applications must be received in either the middle school or high school office no later than Jan. 31 to be included in the lottery, which will be held at the school on Feb. 4. Spirit day: Jan. 15 is Spirit Day/Hat Day at the school. Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite hat.
Spelling bee: The annual spelling bee will be held Jan. 22 in Clanton Hall from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Friends and families are welcome. The two winners from each grade will travel to the district bee in March.
Lottery opens: The CMS student-assignment lottery will run from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. through Feb. 9. The lottery closes at 10 p.m. on Feb. 9. CMS families can go online (www.cms.k12.nc.us/) to apply for magnet programs and for seats in nonmagnet schools with space available.

Ski trip: The Lake Norman Teen Council, supported by the Parks and Recreation departments of Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville, will offer students in grades 6-12 a full day of skiing/snowboarding at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Boone. Chaperones and transportation are provided. When: Monday, 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., Feb. 15. Fee: $60, lift ticket, transportation; $75, ski rental; $85 snowboard rental; extra (optional): $12 ice skating; $12 lessons; clothing rental , $6-$25. Additional spending money needed for lunch and a quick dinner. Fee includes transportation. Departure from the town of Davidson Parks and Recreation office, 416 Armour Street.
