Basketball coaches from Cannon School and Providence Day School will coach barefoot during their game on Jan. 29.
They will join 1,000 other coaches nationwide in an effort to raise awareness, funds and shoes for Samaritan's Feet, a Charlotte-based nonprofit and international humanitarian organization that has pledged to deliver 100,000 pairs of shoes to children in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
Cannon School junior Elizabeth Rubens of Davidson asked the basketball coaches to participate in this initiative as part of her community service commitment at school.
Samaritan's Feet aims to provide shoes to 10 million children worldwide displaced due to poverty, war and natural disaster and who lack a pair of shoes to protect their feet from injury and disease.
Never miss a local story.
Fans attending the game, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Cannon School's Boswell Gym, are encouraged to bring a new, unused pair of shoes and their cell phones. During halftime, fans will have an opportunity to donate $5 by using their cell phone to text the word "shoes" to the number 85944. Each $5 donation will process, warehouse and transport one pair of new athletic shoes to a child in need.
