Beach Bash and fireworks: The Beach Bash in the Park is 6-9 p.m. May 15 at Bailey Road Park with The North Tower Band. Gates will open at 6 p.m. with children's activities and concessions, with the band beginning at 6:30 p.m. Fireworks will follow about 9 p.m. Parking available in the park at 11536 Bailey Road and at Bailey Middle School. No alcohol, pets, glass containers or open flames.
Excellence recognized: Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded the 2009 Excellence in Youth Sports Award by the National Alliance for Youth Sports and Athletic Business magazine. About 3,000 organizations participate in NAYS, and several hundred apply for the award annually. Only five are selected from all 50 states and U.S. military bases. Winning communities will be presented the award in December.

Veterans Monument: About 20 designs have been submitted for the memorial. The jury will select the winning design May 12; the design will be unveiled May 28.
Intersection dedication: A ribbon cutting is scheduled May 14 for the Catawba Avenue/N.C. 115 crossing at the Antiquity development.
A call to artists: The Denver Art Trail is seeking area artists to participate in its October event. Selections will be made by a juried panel. Applications can be requested at email@example.com. Submissions due June 15.
