Bailey Middle School held its first Memorial Day Service honoring local veterans, with a Memorial Day Essay Contest for all of the student body.
The first place winners were sixth-graders Addie McBryde and Katie Holt.
Other winners, all sixth-graders, were: Jimmy Wirth, second place; Alyssa Monroe, third place, and Caitlyn Kingsbury, fourth.
Addie wrote, "When you think of all these men and women that join the services, I hope you think of daddies, mommies, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and children all over America who put their lives on the line for those of us at home to have the life we have today."
Never miss a local story.
Addie's brother, Patrick, is in the National Guard. "I love him very much and couldn't be more proud of him for volunteering to support our home that we call America. He is my knight in shining armor."
Katie wrote, "Being a soldier is the most challenging job I can think of. It's hard for me to understand these things sometimes, but you don't always have to comprehend something to appreciate it. Our soldiers fight for our rights, and everyone including me would like to thank you for this."
