Three new schools have opened in the Lake Norman area this year.
They are the Community School of Davidson High School, Corvian Community School - a private school in Huntersville for students in kindergarten and first grade - and William A. Hough High School in Cornelius.
Hough has open houses scheduled 1-3 p.m. today for juniors, 8-11 a.m. Aug. 19 for freshmen and 1-3 p.m. Aug. 19 for sophomores. Hough is named after a former North Mecklenburg High School principal, who served from 1955-1974. The school is being dubbed a prototype for future high schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system. It has 99 classrooms, 1,300-plus students, an artificial-turf football field and rain gardens that will help filter run-off water that drains into the creek along the back of the property.
Hough High School is at 12420 Bailey Road, Cornelius.

Stacey Haskell, 35, of Huntersville is the founder and director of the Corvine Community School, which she named after her daughters, Cora and Vivian. One will enter kindergarten and the other will enter preschool this year.
She started the school in February after one of her daughters was placed on the waiting list for the Community School of Davidson.
She also modeled the school after CSD and eventually will apply for charter status with the state of North Carolina.
