Angels of '97, a local charity group that raises money for high school scholarships, will celebrate its 15th anniversary by adding a 5k to its event this year.
"We wanted to do something different to bring a different audience and market and to celebrate," said Sherry Harkey, a founder of the group.
Registration is at 7 a.m. March19 at North Mecklenburg High School. The 5k will start 9 a.m. and all other festivities will begin 11a.m.
Register before Thursday for $25; $30 after. General admission is $5.
Each year, Angels of '97 hosts a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and family-friendly games at the high school in remembrance of five North Mecklenburg students who died before their class of 1997 graduation.
The event also commemorates other students from nearby school systems who have died in recent years.
Harkey said that since the group was created, it's honored 45 other students who have died.
"You make a lot of great friends," said Harkey, whose daughter Mandi was one of the original angels. "This has become a place for them to come and show pictures and talk to other parents who have lost a child."
The group usually raises between $25,000 to $30,000, with about 90 percent going toward student scholarships.
Volunteers from Hough and Hopewell will help run the event.
Hough students will not be eligible for the scholarship since the school does not have a senior class yet, said Harkey.
