Congressman visits: Congressman Larry Kissell visited with Cannon School juniors to talk about American history, government and current events. Kissell spoke with the class about his work in Congress and the importance of public service. Kissell is a former high school civics teacher. He took questions from students who are enrolled in civics classes at the school.
St. Mark Catholic
Living Rosary: May 6. Fourth-grade students will lead the school in a Living Rosary. Students will gather around a large rosary while classmates recite the prayer for each bead. Class Mass for the 5th grade is May 11th.
Beginners Day: St. Mark will welcome incoming kindergarteners at the annual Beginners Day. Students and parents will get a peek inside the school with a welcome from Principal Debbie Butler. Students and parents may also visit the current kindergarten classrooms.
Banquet: Middle School Sports Banquet will be May 19.
North Mecklenburg High
Senior photos needed: The school is looking for photos of seniors and friends to possibly use for the school's Senior Breakfast slideshow. Photos may be submitted on a CD no later than May 6, or uploaded by May 8 to bit.ly/nmhsphotos or to email@example.com. Photos must be in good taste, and a name and email address required when submitting. CDs will not be returned.
East Lincoln High
Attendance recovery: Attendance recovery dates for the seventh through ninth unexcused absence can be made up after school from 3:05-4:35 p.m. on the following dates: May 5, 12, 19. Senior only recovery dates at the Lincoln County School of Technology 8 a.m.-1 p.m. take place May 14 and June 4.
Teaching Fellows: Brandon Nichols and Brittain Nichols received the 2011 Teaching Fellows Scholarship. The scholarship is worth $6,500 a year for four years of undergraduate study.
Governor's School: Thomas Basini, a sophomore, will attend the Meredith College Governor's School for instrumental music. Stephen Shenigo, a junior, will attend the Salem College location for natural science.
Catawba Spring Elementary
Golf tournament: The First Annual Catawba Springs' Golf Tournament Tee it Up for Technology will take place 9 a.m. May 13 at Verdict Ridge Country Club, Denver. Proceeds will go toward technology equipment. Sponsorships, volunteers and registration information can be found on the school's website at cses.lincoln.k12.nc.us.
Proctors: Volunteers are needed to help with end-of-grade testing May 17-19 at the school. Proctors assist testing administrators with test materials and monitoring students. Volunteers will be needed from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on test days. Details: 704-736-1895.

Celebrating teachers and staff: The PTO Hospitality Committee will host a luncheon May 5 for the teachers. The PTO will provide lunch, drinks and desserts and is looking for volunteers to send in food, drinks and paper products. Help is also needed to set up, serve and clean up.
