Huntersville Fall Festival: The Barnette Elementary PTA is seeking art and crafts vendors and business sponsors for the second annual Huntersville Fall Festival. The event will be held 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 18 at Barnette Elementary. The event will be free and open to the public. Vendor booths are $25. Popsicles on the Playground: A Popsicles on the Playground meet-and-greet event will be held 4-5 p.m. Aug. 21 for rising kindergarteners and their families on the front playground. J.V. Washam Elementary
Spirit Rock reservations: Reservations are now available for the 2014-2015 school year to paint the J.V. Washam Elementary Spirit Rock located near the entrance of the school. Painting the rock can celebrate a child's birthday or other special occasion. To make reservations, look under “School Announcements” at www.schools.cms.k12.nc.us/jvwashamES/Pages/Default.aspx.
Open house change: Due to a schedule conflict, the times for the Bailey Middle open house have been -changed. The open house will now take place 2-3 p.m. for kindergarten-second grade and 6-7 p.m. for grades three-five, both on Aug. 21.
J.M. Alexander Middle
Open house: 4-6 p.m. Aug. 21 for grades six-eight. Students and families can meet teachers, join the PTSA and sign up for other school activities. Letters will be mailed before school starts with homeroom teacher and bus information.
East Lincoln High
Open house: 4-6 p.m. Aug. 20. The event will include guided campus tours and information about parking passes, PTSO membership, clubs, yearbooks and bus routes. Spirit items will be for sale and families can meet teachers and school administrators. Counselors will be available to meet with students and parents to address class schedule questions.
Countdown to kindergarten: Countdown to Kindergarten, a free communitywide event for rising kindergarten students and their families, will be offered 5-8 p.m. Aug. 15 at Discovery Place KIDS, 105 Gilead Road, Huntersville. Teachers and administrators are needed to volunteer to lead developmentally appropriate activities, including: visiting a mock classroom, carrying a lunch tray, scissor safety, educational games and more. Record enrollment: On Aug. 18, Cannon School will open for the school year and welcome 975 students in junior kindergarten through 12th grade. In the 2014-15 school year, Cannon School will have its largest student body in the school’s more-than-40-year history. Current enrollment exceeds the 2014-2015 enrollment target of 965 students and includes 160 new students from 90 new families. Cannon’s enrollment was 905 in 2012-13 and 940 in 2013-2014.
