Two brothers were taken to the hospital Wednesday after officials say both were shot within 15 hours of each other on the same street in west Charlotte.
The first incident happened when police say someone shot into a car around 1 a.m. Wednesday on Carlyle Drive. A man, who family identified as Brandon Beckham, was shot three times. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and, according to family, released in the afternoon.
As police investigated the shooting, the victim’s brother, Chris Beckham, drove his car through the crime scene tape in the neighborhood. Officers scattered and quickly drew their guns on the car. Officers said he was upset to hear about the shooting, and was not arrested. The entire incident was caught on video.
According to family members, Chris Beckham was later hurt in a shooting just after 4 p.m., also on Carlyle Drive. Medic said one person was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries in that incident.
Relatives said Wednesday evening that Chris Beckham was still in the hospital, but is expected to be OK.
Lakeisha Beckham, the sister of both victims, told WBTV she’s had a sinking feeling in her stomach not once, but twice in 24 hours.
“My heart dropped,” Beckham said.
Beckham says while both brothers are expected to be OK, she can’t believe her family was targeted twice.
“The violence needs to stop, because what they fail to realize is they’re hurting families,” Beckham said.
She said Chris Beckham is a singer who frequently performs at vigils and funerals of homicide victims. “When stuff goes on, people always look at the negative things,” Beckham said. “Chris has done nothing but try and help the community.”
Police have not said what may have led to the shootings, but Beckham says it was an unimportant argument. Chris Beckham, she said, “was just walking across the street and he got caught up in something he had nothing to do with.”
No arrests have been made in either case.
