Providence Day senior boys’ basketball player Chaz Raye has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship from Queens University of Charlotte, according to a Providence Day news release.
The academic scholarship covers four full years of tuition. Raye was one of 14 students selected out of more than 450 who applied for the scholarship. The application process included interviews with Queens faculty, staff and community partners.
“I was shocked and thrilled, but once that moment left I felt honored to be able to receive such a blessing, since there were so many other students at the competition,” Raye said in a release from Providence Day.
Raye, who has been at Providence Day since fourth grade, also competes on the track and field team. This past basketball season, he averaged nine points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals per game and was named to the all-conference team.
“Chaz exemplifies everything that we hope for a Providence Day student-athlete to be,” said basketball coach Brian Field in a release. “He is a student first but also is a great teammate, a tireless worker and a fearless competitor.”
