By foot, car and bus, hundreds of thousands of students from the Charlotte metro region headed to school today for the first day of classes for most North Carolina public systems.
Officials in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and surrounding counties' school systems report a smooth start to the 2008-09 academic year.
Heavy traffic clogged roads between 6:30 and 7:15 a.m. near the Charlotte area's high schools. But no traffic collisions were reported. Sporadic reports of congestion came from elementary and middle schools in the area.
Six new schools open today for CMS, several of them in the fast-growing area of south and southeast Charlotte. Two of them, Polo Ridge and Ballantyne Elementary Schools, are in South Charlotte.
