If you haven't been on Market Street in Baxter Village lately, you won't recognize the place.
Baxter Barber Shop opened about three weeks ago at 1012 Market St. in Suite 102. Owner Brian Dixon is a Weddington resident and took interest in the Fort Mill location after having dinner in Baxter one evening.
His shop has an upscale look, complete with two flat-screen televisions and a black-and-white checkered marble floor. Stop by and check it out, Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call 803-802-3494 to make an appointment.
Right next door, students will be happy to find the new Wellington MathSci Academy, 1012 Market St. Suite 101. Program Coordinator Jason Hwang provides specialized math and science tutoring with classes in regular math and science, advanced math, emergency exam preparation and SAT math tutoring.
Students take a diagnostic test to measure their needs, then Hwang tailors a program based on test results. Office hours are Monday through Thursday 3-7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Questions: 803-548-2446 or www.wellingtonlearning.com.
Most residents are familiar with the attractive white building that was once the Inn at Baxter. The pretty fountain area in front now welcomes visitors to Fish Market restaurant. The restaurant's grand opening Tuesday introduced diners to its seafood dishes as well as chicken, pork and steak items. A children's menu is also available.
Fish Market opens at 11 a.m. for lunch during the week and for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Dinner is available Sunday through Thursday 5-10 p.m., and until 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Reservations: 803-547-4024.
A new school also makes its home at 1171 Market St. The Carpenter's Workshop School is enrolling for kindergarten.
Directors Tammy Puch and Shannon Murray hope to “shepherd the whole child” by providing an alternative educational setting. With a smaller environment, TCWS will engage students in a biblically-based curriculum using cutting edge practices, they said. Details: www.tcwschool.org or 803-619-5091.
