Eighty Beanie Babies are being shipped around the world and 20 more are headed to a local children's hospital, thanks to a group from the Mint Hill Women's Club.
As a summer project, members scoured garage sales and poked through attics, closets and garages to collect as many of the small stuffed animals as possible.
Thirty-one will be shipped to a local Air Force airman, Marshall Mosher, who's stationed in Iraq. They will be distributed to other soldiers who will, in turn, give them to Iraqi children when the opportunity arises.
Mosher is the son of AnnaMary Mosher, a club member.
Another 20 will go to the Levine Children's Hospital to provide cheer for sick children.
Fifty more will fill Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes for children in foreign countries who may never have received a present before.
In addition to special projects, such as the Beanie Baby collection, the Mint Hill Women's Club regularly awards two annual scholarships and donates money to area non-profits.
Their main fundraiser, the Annual Holiday Auction and Bake Sale, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Nov. 17, at Mint Hill Masonic Lodge #742, 10224 Lawyers Road, Mint Hill.
Up for auction will be gift certificates for food, entertainment, services, and more; original art from Mint Hill artists; vacation rentals; gift baskets; and handmade crafts.
The Mint Hill Women's Club started 35 years ago and aims to provide service, social, and self-improvement opportunities for its members.
