New waste contract: Pineville council members decided at their April meeting to change the town's waste contract. Signature Waste will begin its contract in July. Since the town will replace its current recycling bins with larger ones, the town will have recycling once every two weeks. Trash pick-up will remain once a week. Council members will discuss in May whether to petition Charlotte Area Transit System for a direct bus route between Matthews and Pineville. Matthews council members decided in April not to pursue the proposed route.
Dance honors: Miller Street Dance Academy earned 18 first place overall awards and The Ultimate Studio Achievement Award at an April 17-18 Tri-State dance competition in Asheville.
Notable individual award winners included: Peyton Reed, Wesley Chapel Elementary; Lauren Parr, Marvin Elementary; Chase Hintelmann, Elon Park Elementary; Natalie Rogers, Charlotte Latin; Conor McKenzie; Leah Sacani, Ardrey Kell. The studio will travel to Sunset Beach in July to compete in the Encore DCS National Competition.
Students raise money: Jay M. Robinson Middle School raised almost $4,000 to build a school in Uganda, Africa, and help a family buy a pig. Students raised money selling candy, T-shirts and other items. The fundraiser's finale April 23 included a soccer match between the school's girl and boy soccer teams and the Charlotte Eagles.
