New director of admissions: Headmaster Dr. Jack Creeden announced the appointment of Cecil Stodghill as director of admissions beginning July 1. Stodghill is director of graduate support at Academy Preparatory Foundation in St. Petersburg, Fla. Before that he was associate director of admissions at Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa, Fla. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Miami and earned his master's degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Art students honored: Three art students from Charlotte Christian have been honored with four National Scholastic Art Awards and invited to New York for the national awards ceremony in the 87th annual Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Senior Megan Burton won a Gold Medal for her drawing "Hopeless"; senior Meredith Haake won a Gold Medal for her painting "Til Death Do Us Part 2" and a Silver Medal for her painting "Venetian Cross"; and eighth-grader Allie Seeling won a Silver Medal for her drawing "The Cliffs of Kap Arkona." Meredith will also be recognized for her piece "Mrs. Crawford," chosen as one of the American Vision Nominees to be judged at the national level. Details: www.charlottechristian.com.
Middle Ages Day: Sixth-graders explored the life and history of the Middle Ages at the annual Middle Ages Day on April 16. Students came to school dressed as friars, monks, ladies, lords and knights and gathered for an interdisciplinary hands-on learning experience of the Middle Ages in Western Europe. Scholastic writing award: Eighth-grader Dianna Whitlark was awarded a Gold Medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Of the more than 165,000 artists and writers in grades 7-12 who enter, 1,300 are honored with national bronze, silver or gold medals. Dianna won for her short story "Snow," about a cocaine-addicted teen, which she wrote for an assignment in Allison Richardson's English class. On June 9, Whitlark and Richardson will attend a special ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. www.charlottecountryday.org.
South Meck High School
Ecology ambassadors needed: South Meck will earn $30,000 with a week of work at the Quail Hollow Golf Championship. Students, family, community members and staff can work. Money earned will purchase benches and tables, LCD projectors for the classroom, awards for A and B honor roll students and more. Graduation: Ardrey Kell's graduation ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. June 15 at Bojangles Coliseum.
Golf fundraiser: Save the date for the fourth annual golf tournament at Firethorne Country Club May 17. The fundraiser will benefit all Ardrey Kell athletes. Registration forms are due May 3. Odyssey of the Mind: Five Charlotte Latin teams competed in the N.C. Odyssey of the Mind tournament April 10, and three advanced to the OM World Finals May 26-29 at Michigan State University. The school's Taylor/Lax team advanced in two categories. The OM students also won two awards at the state tournament: Fourth-grader Ashley Derrington (McClung team) received the Omer Award, "given to recognize an individual (or team) who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship, exemplary behavior and exceptional talent." The Hammond Team (ninth-graders) received the Ranatra Fusca Award, which is "presented to teams or individuals who exhibit exceptional creativity...."

Athletic Booster Club golf outing: The Athletic Booster Club's spring fundraiser will be 1 p.m. May 3 at Raintree Country Club. Volunteers are needed as sponsors and to field teams.
