Going to all of these events, you have to have a dapper man on your arm.
That is where Emerson Joseph of Ballantyne Village steps in. It is a men's-only grooming salon that is part social club (they offer memberships with exclusive perks) and part day spa.
The salon was recently rated in the Top 30 Men's Salons & Barbershops of Men's Health magazine.
Women are not allowed, so when girlfriends or wives are getting pampered elsewhere, their men can escape to Emerson Joseph's first location Uptown on South Tryon Street or the newer location in Ballantyne Village.
The atmosphere is masculine with flat-screen televisions, pool tables and dark woods. The company's tagline is "Honor the man in the mirror" and that is easy to do with services such as haircuts, color, straight razor shaves and spa treatments.
Other services include shoes shines, custom tailoring, a concierge service and access to "Speakeasy" meeting rooms for an additional charge. The clients say Emerson Joseph is a "disarming" and welcome change to a typically female-driven world.
Take away the salon aspect and you feel as if you are in an upscale bar. Beer is served. For information and pricing, www.emersonjoseph.com or visit either location: Ballantyne Village, 704-369-5181; Uptown, 221 South Tryon Street, 704-343-3443.
There's a place in Ballantyne where you can get an upscale hairstyle and enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee, all while donating to Susan B. Komen for the Cure and Haiti relief funds.
Carmen Carmen salon and spa, located off of Johnston Road, has installed a Gourmet Giving automated coffee maker, where customers can get a coffee-house style beverage for a fraction of the cost. Coffees such as lattes, cappuccinos and mochaccinos can be purchased for $1.25, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the charities.
Since the Gourmet Giving machine opened in 2009, the salon has raised $597. Ballantyne Commons Shopping Center, 704- 540-5640.
