Christmas display: The Matthews Historical Foundation will host "A Dickens Christmas" in the Massey-Clark House, 232 North Trade St. Set up by volunteers from the Union Grove United Methodist Church, this collection includes more than 300 collectible Dept. 56 miniature lighted Christmas homes, shops and buildings. The event is free and open to the public 4-7 p.m. Friday-Sunday until Dec. 12. It also will be open for the "Holiday Stroll" Dec. 9. Group tours may be arranged. Covenant Day School
Serving others: On Dec. 9 and 20, the middle school students at Covenant Day School will participate in "Doulos Day," where they will serve others. The eighth-grade students will pack donated shoebox gifts at Samaritan's Purse. The school was able to collect more than 400 shoeboxes to be filled.

Sixth- and seventh-grade students will serve Samaritan's Feet, a ministry of Samaritan's Purse, where they will lace hundreds of pairs of shoes to be donated to children in need. Details: 704-847-2385.
