The south Charlotte area had another successful cross country season as the Providence Day boys' team and Latin girls' winning state titles and Ardrey Kell boys' and girls' teams becoming the first to sweep the Southwestern 4A team and individual titles in 22 years.
Boys' Runner of the Year: Nick Kapur, Ardrey Kell. Kapur won the SW4A meet and finished third at the 4A West Regionals. He was a major part of the Ardrey Kell team that won the SW4A and 4A Regional, and he finished ninth overall at the state meet. Kapur, who also finished 35th at states, ran a season-best 15:55 in winning his SW4A title.
Boys' Coach of the Year: Ben Hovis, Providence Day. Hovis and the Providence Day cross country team capped a remarkable season with a NCISAA 3A title this year.
Providence Day had five runners in the top 21 positions at the state meet.
Hovis also led the Chargers to their 11th straight Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association title.
Girls' Runner of the Year: Haylee Dawe, Charlotte Latin. Dawe has earned all-state honors each of the last three years at Charlotte Latin.
Dawe finished a remarkable cross country career this fall by winning the NCISAA 3A individual state championship, the CISAA title.
Dawe also led her Hawk's team to a fourth straight state and conference team title.
Girls' Coach of the Year: Brian Zelk, Ardrey Kell.
Zelk coached Ardrey Kell's girls' team to a SW4A title, a NCHSAA 4A West Regional title and a fourth-place finish at the state meet.
The Knights did it with amazing depth, as four runners finished under 19:00 at states.
