Work on the Town of Matthews' long-anticipated Four Mile Creek Greenway, a $1.6 million joint project between the Town of Matthews and Mecklenburg County, is nearing completion.
The greenway will offer more than two miles of paved trails, a boardwalk, pedestrian bridges and entrances from surrounding neighborhoods.
"We hope it improves the quality of life," said Lee Tillery, director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Matthews. "It promotes families being out (together)....exercise, the environment, getting people outdoors."
There's been talk of a greenway in Matthews for years, Tillery said, and construction started in November 2009.
The project was slated to take a year but plans were delayed slightly due to the rainy spring and fall in 2010.
Mecklenburg County is constructing the greenway from East John Street to Brenham Lane, and from Four Mile Creek north to the former Matthews Public Works Facility.
The town will construct a connector path from this site to South Trade Street.
The first greenway within the town limits, Four Mile Creek will connect a number of neighborhoods, as well as Squirrel Lake Park, Matthews Elementary School and Matthews Community Center.
It will also provide alternate access to downtown Matthews.
Trail A, which goes from East John Steet to Brenham Lane, is now complete, open to the public and accessible from the following neighborhood entrances: Brenham Lane, Woody Creek Road, Privette Street, Rockwell View Drive and East John Street.
Trail B, which goes from South Trade Street to near Squirrel Lake Park, should be completed within the next 30-60 days, weather permitting.
Once Trail B is complete, greenway amenities such as signs, benches and trash cans will be added to both sections.
Tillery said the greenway has become a popular spot already.
We've gotten a lot of compliments," said Tillery. "The community is very excited."
Walking and biking on the greenway are permitted but motorized transportation is not allowed. Pets must be on a leash.
The trails will be open from dawn to dusk.
There will be a grand-opening ceremony when the greenway is completed this spring.
