Odyssey of the Mind: Charlotte Country Day's Odyssey of the Mind team took home four trophies in its first year of competition at the Central Regional Odyssey of the Mind tournament. CCDS teams earned three second-place finishes Division 2 in the "Unhinged Structure," "Mousemobile" and "As Good As Goldberg" categories. These teams will advance to the Odyssey of the Mind state tournament in Asheville. In Division 1, one CCDS team placed third in "As Good As Goldberg."
Alumnus selected for service award: Bowman Hitchens, a Covenant Day graduate now a history and religion major at the University of Mississippi, has been selected one of the nation's top 50 students for the Students in Service Award. This award is a national search for inspirational college students positively impacting social and environmental challenges facing communities. Hitchens works with the homeless in Oxford, Miss.

Spring musicals: The fine arts department will present three musicals this spring during its Season of Favorites, which celebrates productions that were favorites during the past 10 years of the theater program: "The Wizard of Oz," 7 p.m. March 24-26, middle school musical; Disney's "Beauty & the Beast," 7 p.m. April 7-9, upper school musical; "Annie Jr.," 7 p.m. May 12-14, lower school musical. Tickets for each show are $7-10, available in advance at www.carolinatix.org or at the door on a first-come basis. Contact the fine arts department at 704-366-5657.
Read Across America Day: Sterling Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day by welcoming visitors, including Beverly Dorn-Steele from WTVI to read to kindergarten and first-grade pupils in the media center. The Charlotte Knights and Homer visited with second- and third-grade pupils. The Public Library of Charlotte Mecklenburg gave a book to every kindergartener in celebration of Read Across America Day. Older students read to their reading buddies in the afternoon.
Art and writing awards: Eleven CMS students have received prestigious national awards for outstanding art and writing through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The 88-year-old national program administered by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers recognizes outstanding creative teenagers and offers scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors. This year's award recipients from CMS include: Kelly Kruger, art - Ardrey Kell High; Meredith Morrow, art - Ardrey Kell High; Liz Wickham, art - Providence High; Christina Disser, writing - Providence High; and Kenzie Knox, art - South Mecklenburg High. These national winners will be honored at a special ceremony Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 31. Select award-winning art and writing will be exhibited at the World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery in Lower Manhattan from June 1-19.
Art and writing awards: Five students received national awards in the 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition and are invited to New York City to attend the National Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on May 31. The following students received national awards: Gold Medal, Katie McDowell, "Life After Death," personal essay/memoir; American Visions Medal, Dominique Pearson, "Puzzled Faces," printmaking; Silver Medal, Morgan Carnes, "A City Divided," art portfolio; Kirsten Dyer, "City of Color," painting; and Coleman Evans, "Melting Youth," photography.
Chorus competition: The Upper School Chorus earned a Superior Rating at the N.C. Music Educators Association's Music Performance Adjudication Festival at Wake Forest University's Scales Fine Arts Center on March 10.

"Once Upon A Mattress": The Fine Arts department will perform the musical "Once Upon A Mattress" 7 p.m. April 7-9. and 3 p.m. April 10.
