Cell Phones for Soldiers
SouthPark mall and Concord Mills have joined forces to hold a cell phone drive benefiting Cell Phones for Soldiers.
Cell Phones for Soldiers is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2004 by siblings Robbie and Brittany Bergquist of Massachusetts when they were only 12 and 13 years old.
This organization provides free calling cards and pre-paid phone services to deployed and returning military members. Started with only $21, Cell Phones for Soldiers has now raised more than $7 million, provided more than 114 million minutes of free talk time and sent more than 8.3 million cell phones to ReCellular to be recycled.
According to the Military Benefits Deployment Center, staying in communication with family members is a top deployment survival tactic.
Cell Phones for Soldiers aims to decrease the rate of divorce, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder that often affects returning troops by making regular communication with family accessible. Throughout May, unwanted cell phones will be collected at Guest Services at both malls and shoppers can make donations directly to Cell Phones for Soldiers on May 28-30. A $5 donation will provide soldiers with 2.5 hours of talk time. Visit www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com for information.
