In honor of Memorial Day, all of the Carolina Voices' choirs, including VOX, Impromptu, Festival Singers and Mainstage, will be joining the Charlotte Civic Orchestra and the Myers Park Baptist Church Chancel Choir for a special two-hour Heroes concert at Myers Park Baptist Church.
Jonathan Crutchfield, minister of Music at the church said Heroes is a "wonderful opportunity for both groups of singers to intermingle and work with each other to bring great patriotic music to the Charlotte community." There will be about 140 singers performing at the 7:30 p.m. May 28 concert along with the 50-member Charlotte Civic Orchestra to "salute our armed forces."
This is "a family-friendly patriotic concert. A true community event with each choir and the orchestra performing pieces by themselves as well as several pieces all together," said Bev Seitz of Carolina Voices.
Part of the concert's proceeds will go to the Urban Ministry Center and their programs. Urban Ministry Center serves poor and homeless people in the greater Charlotte area. The ministry provides meals, hot showers, laundry facilities and offers addiction services, a nurse, employment counseling, AIDS testing and more.
Never miss a local story.
Earlier this year, Carolina Voices teamed with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and had a "Poetry that Sings" competition. They asked middle school and high school students to submit poems about heroism and patriotism. The poems were judged by educational and musical representatives and two were picked as first place winners. There were also four poems that were honorable mentions.
The two first place poems were written by students at Providence High School; "Beacon" by Stuart Schrader and "Stars" by Brynn Claypoole have been set to music by local composer Kevin Gray and will performed at the event by Carolina Voices.
"This combination of poet and musician, of youth and adult, all of whom live in the Charlotte community is quite unique and very exciting to watch. It will be one of the pinnacles of the evening," said Crutchfield.
