The Girl Voice Network and Connecting Families of Char-Meck are joining forces to provide girls and their caregivers the resources to face the sometimes precarious preteen and teenage years.

The groups are hosting a meeting Feb. 21 with keynote speaker Molly Barker, founder of Girls on the Run, and representatives of several local agencies.

The Girl Voice Network is a group of professionals representing various agencies advocating for the needs of girls and young women in Mecklenburg County.

Connecting Families of Char-Meck is affiliated with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Drug Free Coalition, whose mission, according to its website, is to reduce "the harmful impacts of alcohol and other drug abuse and addiction."

Jenny Wade, committee chairwoman of Connecting Families, hopes the town hall event will inspire parents to think about the needs of their girls.

During the first half-hour, parents and their daughters can connect with local agencies to learn about the wide range of services provided, including parenting workshops, health and wellness programs and substance-abuse prevention.

Agencies represented include: CW Williams Health Department, Girl Talk Foundation, Yea GOD! Inc., Charlotte Mecklenburg Drug Free Coalition, Community Health Interventions and Sickle Cell Agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte, ProCure Agency and Another Level Services.

Wade envisions parents and caregivers finding resources to address their needs.
