Essay award: Julianna Rennie won second place in the 2014 Ayn Rand Institute essay contest for her essay on the novel “Anthem.” More than 25,000 essays were submitted.
Queen’s Grant Community School
School award: The school has been awarded three Eagle Awards from the National Heritage Academies. The awards were Schools of Excellence, Student Attendance and Student Enrollment.
The Schools of Excellence award was for superior academic achievement and full enrollment. Student Attendance and Student Enrollment awards were based on outstanding attendance and enrollment percentages. NHA is a charter school management company.
Senior Cleanup: The Class of 2015 cleaned up beaches in Massachusetts Aug. 6-9 as part of the annual senior trip. The group worked with Creating a Responsible Environment for the Cape and Islands and also learned about the impact of trash on the marine environment. Part of school’s mission statement is encouragement of community responsibility.
Cultural Alliance: Hannah Barnes, Catherine Clover and Jessica Flynn and teacher Sharon Oats participated in the Independent Schools Cultural Alliance program in July. The middle school group’s three-week visit to the United Kingdom included stops at Hampton Court Palace, Stonehenge, Oxford University and the Tower of London.
Curriculum Night: Back-to-School Curriculum Night will be held 5-7 p.m. Sept. 16. Parents may follow their child’s schedule and learn about each class’s curriculum and teacher expectations.
Stoney Creek Elementary
New Principal: Mary Newsome was named principal on Aug. 12. Newsome most recently served as principal at Winecoff Elementary in Cabarrus County Schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree from UNC Charlotte.

Elizabeth Lane Elementary
Open House: The school will hold open house Aug. 22 at the following times: K-2 from 10 a.m.-noon and grades 3-5 from 1-3p.m.
Open house: Open house will be held Aug. 21 at the following times: K-2, 4-5 p.m.; grades 3-5, 5-6 p.m. The annual family picnic will be held 4-7 p.m. on the playground.
