Led by a league-leading four preseason first-team All-South Atlantic Conference players, the Wingate men’s soccer team is poised to have another strong season.
Senior forward Gui Peron of Sao Paulo, Brazil, scored a team-high 10 goals last season, with two assists giving him 22 points, also tops on the team.
All-SAC junior midfielders Shaun Gadsby and Liam Gillesphey, both from Newcastle, England, are expected to play key roles. Gadsby led the Bulldogs with five assists last season, and his 17 points were second only to Peron.
If the Bulldogs are to have a successful season, the defense will have to lock down opponents.
Never miss a local story.
Brazilian senior Victor Tozelli, another preseason first-team All-SAC selection, and sophomore Callum Ross of Newcastle are ones to watch. Bulldogs opponents were held to 1.06 goals per game and 9.6 shots per game in 2013, while notching seven shutouts.
Tozelli, Ross and the Bulldogs defense will have the pressure of protecting first-time starting sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Banick of Pickerington, Ohio.
