Nearly 17 miles of Mecklenburg County roads will be improved through an N.C. Department of Transportation resurfacing project scheduled to start Aug. 5, weather permitting.
The $3.9 million contract has been awarded to Blythe Construction Inc. of Charlotte and is anticipated to last through June 2014.
N.C. DOT Communications Officer Jen Thompson said crews will work as much as possible to make improvements between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimize the effect on local traffic, as many temporary lane closures will be required.
But issues such as rain, equipment problems and emergency repairs on other roadways could push some work to be done during the day, which Thompson said is permitted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
According to plans submitted in the pre-construction process, Thompson said, the road improvements likely will occur in the following order:• 1 mile of Sandy Porter Road from north of Brown-Grier Road to Shopton Road.
• 1 mile of Nations Ford Road from Downs Road to the bridge over Sugar Creek.
• 1 mile of McKee Road from Davis Drive to Tilley Morris Road.
• 1 mile of Weddington Road from McKee Road to Plantation Road.
• 0.4 miles of Pleasant Plains Road from Interstate 485 to south of Weddington Road.
• 1.5 miles of Ballantyne Commons Parkway from Providence Road (N.C. 16) to I-485.
• 2.5 miles of Harris Boulevard from North Tryon Street (U.S. 29) to The Plaza, including the access ramps at the interchange with Old Concord Road.
• 1.4 miles of Robinson Church Road from Harrisburg Road to Hood Road.
• 3.1 miles of Lawyers Road from Albemarle Road to N.C. 51.
• 2.2 miles of Lebanon Road from N.C. 51 (Matthews-Mint Hill Road) to Margaret Wallace Road.
• 1.4 miles of Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) from Matthews- Mint Hill Road to the Union County line.
• 1.7 miles of access ramps at the interchange of Matthews Township Parkway (N.C. 51) and Independence Boulevard.
“That’s subject to change,” Thompson said of the tentative schedule, noting long portions of improvements such as Harris Boulevard will be broken into smaller segments.
Additionally, crews may jump between different road-improvement areas and could revisit a section several times.
“They can start by patching, then go back to resurface,” Thompson said. This is especially true given resurfacing and repaving work can’t be done in colder temperatures, and repair work will cease between November/December through March, Thompson said.
This project is one of many contracts awarded annually to improve state-maintained roads within Mecklenburg County and others across the state, using funding that comes from a variety of sources such as gas taxes and car sales, Thompson said.
Last year, more than 50 miles of interstate, primary and secondary roadways in Mecklenburg County were improved through the same process.
Work already has started on another $3.8 million resurfacing contract, awarded last month, that will address nearly 16 miles of roads in Mecklenburg County, Thompson said.
Thompson reminded motorists to be patient during the process, to drive slowly in work areas and watch out for crew members.
