A former assistant pastor of an east Charlotte church was sentenced to at least 24 years in prison on Wednesday for sexually assaulting children.
Nicolas Vasquez, 41, entered a guilty plea in Mecklenburg County Superior Court to two counts of first-degree sexual offense with a child and one count of indecent liberties with a child.
Vasquez was originally charged with 18 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, 11 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and five counts of first-degree sex offense.
Authorities searched his home in February 2016 and seized evidence related to the case, including pornographic images of the alleged victims, according to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner.
Police said the four victims, boys and girls, were between the ages of 9 and 12, and that Vasquez was “an active member” at the Asamblea Apostolica Church on Robinson Church Road.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detectives said Vasquez knew some of the victims through family relationships and others through the church.
Investigators said that the assaults happened at Vasquez’s house.
