Two men were charged with attempted murder in a hammer attack on a man whose injuries were so severe he had to be taken by helicopter to a Charlotte hospital, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and EMS responding to an assault at a home on the 2500 block of Stroupe Road early Sunday were told the victim had been hit in the head with a hammer and had uncontrolled bleeding, according to a sheriff’s report. They found the 38-year-old victim lying face-down on an outbuilding ramp with no shirt on and severe injuries to the back of his head.
The victim’s juvenile son was sitting beside his father, crying and covered in blood, deputies said, and the victim’s daughter was running in the yard screaming, with blood on her face.
The children had been outside with their father and two men, Cory Dain Martin, 22, and Adam Kasey Martin, 26, the report states. They told deputies the adults had been drinking and “hanging out,” and that when Adam Martin and Cory Martin arrived, there was “some sort of dispute” in which Cory Martin threatened the victim and his family with a gun.
The men reportedly “settled their differences” and continued drinking, deputies said. The victim told his children to go inside, the report states, and they later heard “loud bangs, as if someone was hitting the aluminum outbuilding” where the men had been drinking.
When the victim’s daughter looked outside, she saw the three men fighting and told her brother they needed to go help their father, deputies said. The girl picked up a piece of metal that resembled a lawnmower blade and hit Adam Martin with it as he and Cory Martin tried to leave.
One of the men threw a hammer over the outbuilding as they left, the report states. The victim’s son said he heard the suspects say they both “got their chances to beat (the victim) and that his family would be next.”
The report does not indicate the ages of the children, or whether Cory Martin and Adam Martin are related. The victim was taken by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. His condition was not known Monday.
While deputies were still at the Stroupe Road home, they received a call about a suspicious vehicle nearby. The suspects in that case matched the description of the suspects in the hammer assault, according to the report.
Cory Martin and Adam Martin were charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and trespassing. Adam Martin also was charged with possession of marijuana. Both remained in the York County Detention Center without bond Monday.
