One woman was killed and another charged with DUI after a crash on Interstate 77 in Rock Hill on Thursday, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Jeannine Valdes, 35, was charged with felony DUI resulting death, according to jail records. She was placed in the Moss Justice Center, where she remained Friday morning without bond.
The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. Thursday on I-77, about four miles north of Rock Hill, according to Lance Cpl. Tony Keller of the Highway Patrol.
Valdes was traveling north on I-77 when she rear-ended another vehicle, Keller said. Both vehicles exited the right side of the roadway and traveled down an embankment, where the vehicle Valdes hit overturned.
The driver of the vehicle that was hit was taken by ambulance to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Keller said.
The 23-year-old passenger in that car had to be extricated, Keller said. She was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, where she died. Her identity will be released by the York County Coroner’s Office once the family has been notified.
Valdes was taken by ambulance to Piedmont Medical Center, Keller said. She was given a blood test, the results of which are pending.
The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Reconstruction Team.
This is the third fatal crash in York County since Sunday.
