The driver of a car hit head-on by a van that crossed the center line on Shopton Road West June 6 has died of his injuries.
Raymond Anthony Lipscomb, 53, died Tuesday at Carolinas Medical Center, police said. Lipscomb had been in critical condition since the wreck, in which a passenger in the van also died.
Police said Wednesday they have obtained an arrest warrant charging the van’s driver, Luis Enrique Gomez-Espino, 22, of Monroe, with an additional charge of misdemeanor death by vehicle.
Police said Gomez-Espino lost control of the northbound van after its right side veered onto the shoulder of the road about 5:40 p.m. Gomez overcorrected, police said, and the van slid across the double yellow lane divider, hitting Lipscomb’s 2011 Hyundai Elantra head-on.
The van rotated after impact and rolled laterally, ejecting the van’s front-seat passenger, Alexis Arciga, 16, who was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Medic pronounced Arciga dead at the scene.
Gomez was treated at Carolinas Medical Center for minor injuries and released. He also was cited for having no operator’s license.
Gomez and Lipscomb had seat belts on. Speed, alcohol or other drugs did not contribute to the wreck, police said.
