Two men were taken into custody Wednesday night in Matthews after they allegedly robbed a sub shop in Indian Trail, authorities say.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said the robbery was reported about 9 p.m. at Firehouse Subs on U.S. 74, a bit west of Unionville-Indian Trail Road. Two armed men entered the restaurant around closing time and demanded money.

After robbing the restaurant, investigators say, the men got into a car and fled westward on U.S. 74 toward Mecklenburg County. Deputies spotted a vehicle fitting the description of the getaway car and began pursuing it.

The pursuit crossed into Mecklenburg, and authorities say the fleeing vehicle crashed near Matthews Township Parkway. The men were taken into custody within minutes.

Deputies have not released the names of the suspects or the charges they face.

No injuries were reported.
